White: Did you see something?

???: What the-what is that?!

???: That light….it cut across the sky like a knife…!

White: It’s a comet!

White: A really big one, and so beautiful too. It is a great force that is far beyond the reach of this world.

???: ......Incredible….

White: Oh my, my. Look at you, showing interest in something that’s not cooking.

White: The outside world is a giant treasure chest full of amazing things like that comet there.

???: Outside….

White: ……

White: Beautiful child of the pearl. Do you…would you like to see the outside world?

???: ….um……

???: …..I don’t really understand how difficult it might be, but…

???: If there’s something just as beautiful as that light we just watched, I want to see it….I dunno. I feel like I do.

White: Well if that is how you feel, let me open the way for you. It’s not much, but it is the least I can do.

???: Are you saying it’s okay…is it really okay to go outside?

White: Yes, that’s what I said! The treasure chest we call the world is just waiting for you to discover all of its secrets.

???: Outside. Me, going outside….

???: …….Oh-I want to thank you, but all I have with me is this…..

White: Hoho, your very own homemade cookie! This is the first time I’ve ever gotten such a sweet bribe.

White: In that case, I most certainly accept! I, Lieutenant Commander White, invite you outside to spread your wings.

…I can hear something nostalgic.

I heard it on a summer day, as soon as it faded away……

There was more than just the sound, too. I could smell something cool and refreshing in the air. This was definitely….
 

(scene fades in to what appears to be a ship littered with gold)
 
Akira: …Huh?

Akira: Did I accidentally fall asleep? This is….

Akira: The ocean..?


There are ocean birds flying across the deep blue sky, and clouds were billowing high above me. As I came to my senses, I realized I was laying out on the deck of a ship.

It was one of those old-fashioned ones with sails, and a long mast stabbed into the sky as it towered over me.

Even though the humid wind was passing me by, for some odd reason all I could think about how thirsty I was. And about how…I wanted to leave…..


???: Oh, you’re awake?
 
It was only when the voice spoke that I realized there was someone right next to me. Flustered, I turned towards them only to be greeted by a young man sitting above me, dressed in fine clothes.

The gold chains on his clothes and hat were glittering brilliantly in the sunlight. It was a marvelous sight, but what struck me as most beautiful was….
 
Akira: His hair is the same color as the sky...

Akira: You are...
 
Nero: Nero.
 
Akira: Nero….


His gaze fixed on me like he was trying to guess who I was, so I got up to properly introduce myself.


Akira: Nice to meet you, Nero. I um, my name is Akira.

Nero: Akira, huh? It’s my pleasure.

Nero: Then, Akira. This might be kinda bad of me to ask after we just met, but….

Akira: ….?

Nero: Did ya try to run away from a slave ship?

Akira: A slave ship??

Nero: When we found, you were passed out on the shore covered in rags. And, well…..your wrist. It looks kinda like a burn mark.

Nero: I just kinda picked you up then without thinkin’ about it, even if….Well, if that wasn’t what happened, I thought I could ask ya where ya wanted to get dropped off and no harm done.


I instinctively looked back down at my whole body at Nero’s words.

I was wearing a shirt that was far too large for me, but indeed, underneath that my original clothes were ragged and riddled with holes.

And since the sleeves were rolled up….


Akira: (He’s right. There’s some sort of mark around my right wrist. It looks like a wing….it doesn’t hurt when I touch it, but where did it even come from??)

Akira: (How did this odd thing appear….No, I should really be thinking about where I came…..from….)

Akira: (....Huh…..?)

Akira: I don’t….remember.

Nero: Don’t remember?

Akira: Anything about myself. Like where I'm from or who I am….But, I mean, I know I’m on something called a ship.

Akira: Only….where I lived, who my family was…. It was like any memories of that are entirely washed away.

Akira: I’m sure this all sounds pretty ridiculous to you…

Nero: Not really.

Akira: Eh?

Nero: The longer ya live, the more you can’t stop yourself from forgetting things. And honestly, I think there’s a lotta things we’d all be happier off forgetting.

Nero: If ya don’t remember now, you shouldn’t force it. Just keep stickin’ to it, and if you really do wanna remember from the bottom of your heart, it’ll come to ya.


Nero’s expression wasn’t particularly friendly or happy, but the words he was so carelessly spinning for me definitely showed concern.


Akira: (...How incredible of him, since we only met by chance…)


Being near him felt comforting somehow, like I could finally breathe easier.


Akira: Thank you very much….I think I am feeling a little more at ease now.

Nero: That’s good then.

Nero: Anyway, it’s no problem if you take a break here. Everyone here looks scary, but they’re actually pretty good guys.


Now that he mentioned it, there were a ton of wild-looking guys roaming around the ship. As I examined my surroundings further, my gaze landed on the ocean spread out around the ship, marbled in pink and blue.

???: Oi, finally awake? Lookin’ for a pick-me-up or somethin’?

I hear a voice behind me and turn around in confusion. When I did, I spotted a man standing there with a similar style of dress to Nero.


???: Ahaha, you got the nerve to look so carefree in front a’ me, huh? Looks like this little shit’s new around here.


Vicious scars cut across the skin on his chest and the bridge of his nose. Though his shoulders were still shaking with laughter, I could still feel his intense presence looking down on me.

He had such a grand and imposing figure, it was like the whole sky, the ocean behind him, and everyone else was just the supporting cast for his mere presence.


Akira: (Amazing….he makes such a lovely picture even just standing there…)

???: What’s got ya like that, huh? You’re all frozen like ya turned to stone-ya fall in love with me already?


His wine-colored eyes pierced through me like he was ridiculing my behavior, and I came to my senses with a sudden jolt.


Akira: I-I’m sorry! I was just so um, fascinated by you.

Akira: Then, um, well it’s nice to meet you, Bradley. Nero told me he saved me, actually.

Bradley: Well he ain’t the type to lie. Still…don’t mean I get where th’ fuck he got the idea from.


He really was such an intimidating person…Once again Bradley’s examining me with his steely gaze.

Before long though, he just gave a broad laugh, looking over at Nero.


Bradley: Even though you’re just a lil brat wearin’ my hand-me-downs, you’re still able t’ get yerself involved in somethin’ where ya start pickin’ up random people, eh, Nero?

Nero: ….I’m sorry, it was all my idea. But, I don't think I can be considered a brat….

Bradley: Oh, we startin’ to talk back now, are we? Ya know, when I first picked ya up, you’d just not talk and stare around vacantly.

Nero: Well that’s-Isn’t it better to say it’s my own growth as an adult….I did my best since I was told the Captain wanted me t’ be more chatty.

Bradley: Ahaha! Ain’t that nice, this trend. Well, I’ll stop treatin’ ya like a brat when ya fit those clothes a lil better.


Drawn in by Bradley’s words, I look over the pairs’ outfits again. The signature look of their hats and decorations gave me the impression of a certain….


Akira: (.....Ah....)


A splendid ship with sails. Bradley being called “Captain”. Everyone looked like they were rugged seafarers-I think I understand now.


Akira: Could you two possibly be….

Crewmate: Captain! A report!

Bradley: What is it?


The moment the report was delivered, Bradley’s eyes lit up. His whole energy changed; his eyes now held the same cold shine as the sunlight glinting off the edge of a knife.


Crewmate: A ship with unknown affiliation drawing near from NNE! If we keep our current course, we will pass by at point blank range!


Bradley quickly takes out a spyglass, and his sharp eyes follow the ship as it starts to draw near. And just like that, he let out a brazen laugh.


Bradley: Don’t change our path. Forward, full-steam ahead.

Nero: …….

Licking my lips, I let out a sinful laugh. Playing up being drunk, it was easy to link arms with my companion and cling tightly to them.

Despite being a citizen of the West Country, this man who said he was close to Nicholas was fairly unassuming and quiet.

He looked at me scornfully when I repeated my badmouthing of Nicholas. ‘Oh…he’s a good guy,’ was all I could think.

Travelers bringing down their luggage are receiving hay across the front counter for, I assume, the stables in the back that held their treasured horses.

Legally speaking, I am obliged to speak to the head of staff about investigating the premises, but that would have made me far too conspicuous.

Instead, while calling to mind an image of a cloudy, pitch black mirror, we made to walk by the front counter.

It was completely opaque, as if saying ‘there is nothing here’ to anyone who perceived it.

Rather than magic, it was better to call it just an ordinary spell that could still affect the East spirits.

Since I became an East wizard, I grew a disposition of not speaking more than necessary. But that is also what makes us East wizards suited for espionage.

Being careful and cautious are our strong points, and rarely do we find a need to go overboard.

Even the normally boastful Shino is like that. Despite his rather lofty ambitions, he’s really not-well, mostly not-in any way reckless.

If he’s facing a strong opponent, he’s the first to turn vigilant, changing his tactics to suit the situation. For a kid that hates tests, he’s certainly running calculations in his head often enough.

Faust:  Hmm…I see. Then…..cats are really cute. 


Cain: Faust? Are you around here somewhere??


Faust: Cain?? Um, I’m right here. Here, touch my hand. 


Cain: Thanks. Hey, weren’t you chatting with someone just now??


Faust: I’m alone here, thank you. I found these old magic tools, so I’ve been using this place to test their efficacy. 


Faust: Here, look at this doll. 


Cain: Wow, this little guy looks super cool! The wood grains, and its empty, cold** expression give it a nice vibe! 


Cain: Also, I think there’s a little hint of magic in it. Would it be able to have a talk with me? 


Faust: I…suppose you can, but its function is that it shows whether what you’re saying is the truth or not.


Faust: For instance….Cain is a well-liked, cheerful and talkative young man.

Faust: What the hell…If you suddenly start saying a bunch of strange things, you shouldn’t be surprised it did! 


Cain: Ah, my bad, my bad. That was at least realistic, right? 


Cain: Okay then, how ‘bout this? One time I took Oz by the hand, and we danced together in the ballroom.


Faust: Doing a hand-holding formal dance like that, I’d expect….the right hand??!! That wasn’t a lie??!!


Cain: Well, one of us had to lead the other, though neither of us wanted to give in. 


Cain: So I was like “May I have this dance?”, and then held out my hand. That got us paired up, though in the end we ended up taking turns leading. 


Faust: Oz being your partner for such a thing….these kids are the embodiment of recklessness, I swear….


Faust: I…am not going to touch that further. That aside, didn’t you come around here because you had something to take care of, Cain? 


Cain: Oh, that’s right-I was. Riquet wanted to ask if you had any plans to review your last session in the future…


Cain: Hey, if you didn’t mind, why don’t you lend the doll out a bit? 


Faust: I don’t mind, but wouldn’t that not be studying? Everyone would be distracted by this thing instead.


Cain: Well, it might be like that, but they'd probably also be really interested in it; besides, I wanna show it to Riquet. Y’all should take a break from studying! 


Cain: Ah…but originally, didn’t you bring this thing along for Heath and Shino?


Faust: No, it’s not that. I don’t mind lending it out, but since I heard those kids are on an urgent mission, I don’t want them to get left out. 


Faust: Besides, since Riquet usually gets curious about things like these, he will want to introduce everyone to it ….why are you grinning?


Cain: Sorry, it’s just….well, every time you talk, I think the doll is raising its right hand….


Faust:  ….We’re done talking. Ugh, it isn’t lowering its hand. I wouldn’t lie when talking about these things!


Cain: Ahaha-Okay, I’m definitely gonna borrow it now. Riquet’s gonna love this.


Cain: Don’t worry, I’ll return it here when we’re done with the study session! Oh, Arthur’s probably also gonna love this doll, so we should all play with it together when we get back!


Faust: Please do that. Hey, I’m leaving. After you hand that thing out, don’t let it interfere with your studying. 


Cain: Yeah. Thanks, Faust!



((**Fun fact, Cain actually uses the adjective ニヒル here, which really means nihilistic. I looked into it and it turns out it has been sort of skewed by people so now it is often used to describe someone who is 'cold and unfeeling', but without more context of whether this was something the sage taught him or he was trying to use it straight, I'm just going with the funniest option b/c tbh, it's Cain. ))

The Forest of Dreams is a location in the North Country that can be used for training, connected to the North wizard Owen.

In Game Description:

This mysterious and lovely forest almost seems like it was taken straight from the pages of a fairy tale; but the trees here are imbued with magic that releases a deadly poison. As it eats away at a person’s body, it shows them pleasant and comforting dreams. As a consequence, many people nearing death travel to the forest to soak in these last bits of joy before they pass on.

Owen, when bored, will often visit these people hovering on the edge to mess around with for his own amusement. When asked about why, he simply said ‘They seem comfortable here.’

The Lake of the Dead is a location in the North Country that can be used for training, connected to the North wizard Mithra.

In Game Description:

While it is an excellent source of water, this lake has a harsh climate. Any sort of civilization that forms on its outskirts has eventually perished one after the other. There is an island in the center of the lake, where Mithra, having taken on the role of ‘ferryman’, gathers the bodies of the dead. Because of the corpses littering the shoreside, the villagers have taken to calling that island ‘The Land of the Dead’. As for Mithra himself, it seems that he had grown up alongside the frozen bones.

In Game Description:

This town is where Mitile and his older brother used to live. Despite being surrounded by wilderness in the middle of reclamation, this town has a peaceful atmosphere. The townsfolk are openhearted and friendly, and discrimination is rarely directed towards wizards. In fact, they not only coexist peacefully, but lend each other aid when needed. The village's children usually end up gathering at their school, or Figaro's clinic nearby.

The Swamp of Pestilence is a location in the South Country that can be used for training, and connected to the South wizard Figaro.

In Game Description:

This vast marshland is home to a huge variety of wildlife, a far cry from its morbid history. Long ago, a horrible plague had swept through the area, granting the swamp its name. It was only through Figaro’s power and guiding hands that humans were able to reclaim this place to live in once again. The rainy season brings with it a blessed rain, and the swamp blooms with a bounty of delicious fruit for the locals to gather. Looking down at this paradise, it is hard for any to imagine why this place had ever been called ‘The Swamp of Pestilence’ in the first place.
